THE SCOPE AND BASIC CONCEPTS 

 INTRODUCTION TO MARKETING 
Marketing is, in fact, a learning game. This is my latest but precise and meaningful idea I conceived in my heart after I have had over fourteen years romance with Marketing. When I think that I have finally understood Marketing, it starts a new dance and I find myself compelled to follow it dance and enjoy the music as best as I can.

Sometime ago I was trying to think through the revolutionary impact on the Marketplace and Marketing practice of the New Technologies - the Internet, E-Mail, Fax Machines, Sales Automation Software and new Media Cable TV, Video Conferencing, C.D.s and so on and so forth. I sensed that the greatest impact is yet to come, as the forces of Technology and Globalization move apace. 

Previously, it was Marketplace, but today we have Market-space, namely: Internet and so on. Computers and the Internet will bring about enormous behaviour shifts in buying and selling. That is, at best, a development in Marketing.

No doubt, a sound knowledge of Marketing Management will help both Manager of Business and Entrepreneurs who are establishing their own businesses. In other to manage successfully one must know and understand all aspects of Marketing Management activities, before situations develop and one is forced to react unprepared or begin to find oneself in a mess of business bankruptcy. Marketing is, indeed, a rewarding and challenging Career. 

Just ask yourself if you can develop the qualities necessary to manage the Marketing function, such as Inspiration, Imagination, Integrity and Courage and so be a success in this challenging, and demanding piece of work. 

Marketing is, in fact, very interesting in that Markets are dynamic; they constantly change, so that continuous updating, coupled with unrelenting energy and a sense of responsibility are compulsory requirements. Call to memory the important fact that the survival of any business Organization depends largely upon its Marketing Orientation. While calling for several talents along with a broad academic achievement, Marketing profession affords high and immediate rewards. Remuneration is usually determined by performance which can be recognized instantly and applied effectively, without frustrating promotion ladders. Most employers increasingly recognize this as a vital contribution, while many actively encourage and help promising new employers to acquire essential Marketing qualifications.

Marketing embraces a wide spectrum of activities from the initial Marketing Research, Forecasting and Planning through Sales, Advertising, Public Relations, Distributions and After Sales Service. It does, of course, utilize some of the latest techniques and technology to minimize the "risk-taking" element associated with any business decision.

THE MEANING & DEFINITIONS OF MARKETING 
Marketing is, indeed, wide in scope; being a Social Science, it offers a variety of definitions from Scholars of different fields of Marketing. In fact, we can distinguish between a Social and a Managerial definitions of Marketing. 
Marketing, in its Social definition, is a societal process by which individuals and groups obtain what they need and want through creating offering  and exchanging products and services of value freely with others.

On the other hand, Marketing was originally seen as "the art of selling products". However, Marketing in its conception based on the latest development involves just more than that. Hence, Peter Drucker, a leading Management theorist in his authentic statement: "The aim of Marketing is to make Selling superfluous". 

In fact, the aim of Marketing is to know and understand the customer so well that the product or service fits him and sells itself.

The Managerial definition of Marketing can readily be observed in the various definitions of Scholars of Marketing as well as International Marketing Bodies.

For instance, the Institute of Marketing, United Kingdom, defined Marketing as 
"the Management process responsible for identifying, anticipating and satisfying customer requirements profitably". 

In his book, "Global Marketing Management", Professor Warren J. Keegan defined Marketing as "the process of focusing the resources and objectives of an Organization upon opportunities in the environment". 
He added that the essence of Marketing is creating customer value that is greater than the value created by competitors. This, according to him, can be accomplished only by focusing and concentrating resources and efforts on well-defined needs and wants.

Philip Kotler, in his book, "Marketing Management", USA defined Marketing as 
"the set of human activities directed at facilitating and consummating exchanges" .

Marketing, indeed, involves Selling and covers the full gamut of Analysis, Promotion and Coordination. The concept of Marketing essentially embraces the necessary studying of environment, the outlook assessment, analytical view of the actual and potential markets, discovering of customer' wants, in terms of products and services, ascertaining where they want them, getting to know how best to advise them of what is available, consideration of the strength of competition, anticipation of changes in demand, including, of course, other policy considerations that would probably lend themselves.

 In effect, Marketing is concerned with all aspects of the product from its inception, design, distribution, pricing, selling and promotion until it eventually gets into the possession of the customer. Hitherto, the Marketing functions continue reaching to the extent of ensuring customer satisfaction by the provision of After-sales Service, as can easily be noticed in maintenance, repairs, quality guarantees and provision of instruction booklets, and even spare parts. Therefore, 
Marketing implies a discovery of people's wants, or needs, and then, in case where this could be done profitably, producing, distributing and selling.

Hence, the American Marketing Association's offer of definition of Marketing as 
"the process of planning and executing the conception, pricing, promotion and distribution of ideas, goods and services to create exchanges that satisfy individual and organizational goals". 

The task of coping with exchange processes as contained in the above definition calls for a considerable amount of work and skill. Thus, we observe 
Marketing Management as 
"the Art and Science of applying core Marketing Concepts to choose target markets and get, keep and grow customers through creating, delivering and communicating superior customer value".

The fact that Marketing is wide in scope is an assertion that demands a brief touch.

Virtually all Marketing theorizing older than four decades ago dealt with "For-profit"  Firms struggling to sell their products and services just to make profit. Nevertheless, there are other Organizations in existence, namely: Non-profit and Government bodies who are equally confronted with Marketing problems. 

Schools and Colleges, for example, are seen competing for students. Performing arts organizations want to develop audiences. Museums seek to attract visitors; Politicians ask for Votes; the Medical doctors look for patients; Churches seek for membership numerical growth, while Artists seek celebrity. Individuals, too, are often found carrying out serious Marketing activities. In fact, what is really common to all such cases is the desire on the part of someone to attract a response or resource from someone else vis-a-vis attention, interest, desire, purchase, or commendation, etc. However, to elicit those responses, one must offer something that someone else perceived to be of value, so that the other party willingly offers the response or resource in exchange.

Thus, exchange emerges as the core concept underlying Marketing. In fact, marketable objects include more than products and services. Marketers are involved in Marketing THE TYPES OF ENTITIES, namely, Goods, Services, People (Person Marketing), Places, Idea & Information (Social Marketing), Experiences - such as in publishing articles (Experience Marketing), Organizations (Organization Marketing), Events and Properties. 

Most Social functions, including Religious ones, issuing forth as a by-product of a Marketing Effort, are targeted to achieve consumer satisfaction. In other words, a Church that conducts a program of Crusade is actually involved in a serious Marketing job, the important job of winning new converts or Church members.

Meanwhile, because of limitation of time scheduled for this specialist lecture, let's call it a day, pending our subsequent Lecture time when we shall delve into the next vital subtopic, namely: "THE SCOPE OF MARKETING". This is an interesting and vital subject of great dimensions; and we shall live to enjoy the end of the lecture, if Lord Christ De Messiah tarries in His DIVINE RAPTURE Of The Blessed Kingdom Saints @ Heavenly Zion Of Jerusalem In Glory Above. 

In case Lord Christ De Messiah does eventually arrive, in His full Divine manifestation, we shall abandon everything, including Marketing, to 
MEET Him In The Air, in the Clouds of Glory 
(Up In The Sky Of Heaven Above)
